Four common types of grass in Central Florida:
1. Zoysia Grass
A popular choice, Zoysia boasts great shade tolerance, but it is sometimes prone to nematode infestation and also highly susceptible to fungus. Some microscopic soil dwelling nematodes are beneficial as they feed on decaying material, but others can damage stems, foliage, roots, and flowers.
2. Bermuda Grass
A perennial warm-season grass, meaning it comes back every year and grows most actively from late spring through hot summer months. Bermuda grass is more sensitive to cold temperatures than warm-season Zoysia grass or cool-season grasses, such as turf-type tall fescue.
3. St. Augustine Grass
Originating from the Mediterranean coast and the gulf coast of Mexico, St. Augustine grass is the most popular for both residential and commercial applications. It can grow in many types of soil, but it is susceptible to chinch bugs
4. Bahia Grass
A native of Brazil, Bahia Grass is drought tolerant, but this grass requires full sun and is often damaged by mole crickets.
