The German cockroach (Blattella germanica), is a small, nocturnal, indoor cockroach found throughout human settlement world wide. These cockroaches are particularly associated with restaurants, food processing facilities, hotels, and nursing homes.
Characteristics – German cockroaches can be tan through brown to almost black, and has two dark parallel streaks running from the head to the base of the wings. The much smaller nymphs (young) are darker with similar streaks behind the head.
The German cockroach reproduces faster than any other residential cockroach, going from egg to sexually mature adult in approximately 123 days. Females need mate only once in their lifetime. They will produce 4 – 6 ootheca during their lifetime with each containing approximately 30 – 40 eggs. Once fertilized, a female German cockroach develops an ootheca on her abdomen which will swell as her eggs develop.
Risk to Humans
German cockroaches are known to secrete a number of odors. With large population numbers, a mild, musty odor may be present. German cockroaches are also known for their ability to transmit a number of pathogens, including E. coli, Salmonella and Typhus. It has been suggested that large, concentrated populations of German cockroaches may be linked to asthma in children.
